Vertical auger juicers have a few advantages over other types of juicers. Horizontal auger juicers tend to not juice as well, be harder to clean up, and take MUCH longer to juice a given amount of produce. Horizontal twin gear juicers have a lot of parts, more complicated assembly, and are a nightmare to clean. Very expensive commercial juicers like the Norwalk extract a lot of juice from a variety of produce well, but cost thousands of dollars, are bulky, and are complicated to set up and clean. With their large augers and opening, vertical auger juicers can grab and juice produce more quickly, typically cutting juicing time to 1/3 of that for horizontal auger and twin gear juicers. The Omega VSJ843QS has a different auger design than masticating auger juicers called Slow Squeezing Technology (SST). SST technology allows the VSJ843QS to extract the maximum amount of nutrients, vitamins, juice, and flavor from a minimum amount of fruits, vegetables, and leafy greens while leaving less pulp in your juice. That translates to a lot of money saved with regular juicing. Why throw expensive juice out with the pulp? The incredibly slow 43 rpm auger speed means no heating and less oxidation of your juice, preserving nutrients.
In our testing, the vertical single auger juicers we sell at Fresh And Alive yield about 25% more juice than horizontal single auger and twin gear juicers from Omega, Tribest, Samson, Hurom, and others. That adds up to a lot of money over time with regular juicing! (With any juicer, you get best results when you alternate feeding soft and harder produce; the harder produce helps create back pressure in the juicer that allows soft produce to be squeezed better.)
Based on our testing, vertical auger juicers are the de facto best household juicers for the money because they juice a wide variety of produce well, much more quickly than horizontal auger or twin gear juicers. In our tests, the vertical auger juicers we sell juice in 1/3 the time of the horizontal single auger and twin gear juicers from Tribest, Omega, and Samson, and are much faster to use and clean than the $2,800 Norwalk juicer. That means what used to take 45 minutes to juice now takes 15 minutes! Twin gear juicers are also a time-consuming nightmare to clean, with many little parts to clean and wear out. This is why we only sell certain vertical auger juicers. We use what we sell!
Centrifugal juicers with a high-speed spinning basket like you commonly see in juice bars and restaurants produce juice fast, but they oxidize juice massively, destroying some antioxidants, nutrition, and healing value. Centrifugal juicers also do not juice leafy greens very well, and in general produce less juice with much wetter pulp, which costs you a lot more for produce in the long run. (Restaurants don't mind, they just pass the cost on to you.) Centrifugal juicers are also very time-consuming to clean since they have a very large screen that gets very clogged with pulp fiber that must be wire-brushed to remove.
One great thing about this juicer is the ease of cleaning the juicer screen. With a small stainless steel or brass wire brush brush rather than the plastic brush that comes with the juicer, cleanup time goes much faster and doesn't harm the screen in the least. When juicing only leafy greens or wheatgrass, the screen just rinses clean with little to no brushing!
